Professional Learning Approaches - Key Research
We know that students will be better able to demonstrate proficiency in mathematics only after their teachers have committed to teaching methods that create ample opportunities for students to develop the Standards for Mathematical Practice. The question is, what supports do teachers need to successfully implement these effective methods?
As in any profession, adult learning is the key to shifting approaches and affecting outcomes. We turn to the results of a study by Robert N. Bush published in 1984 reporting the impact of five different levels of teacher training on classroom instruction.
